GENERAL INFORMATIONThe stat<strong>em</strong>ents set forth in this bulletin are for informational purposes only and should not be construed as the basisof a contract between a student and <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong>.While the provisions of this bulletin will ordinarily be applied as stated, <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong> reserves theright to change any provision listed in this bulletin, including but not limited to acad<strong>em</strong>ic requir<strong>em</strong>ents for graduation,without actual notice to individual students. Every effort will be made to keep students advised of any suchchanges. Information concerning changes in policies, procedures, and requir<strong>em</strong>ents will be available in the officesof the registrar, the acad<strong>em</strong>ic advisors, student services and in the acad<strong>em</strong>ic departments of the major schools andcolleges. It is especially important that each student note that it is his or her responsibility to be aware of currentgraduation requir<strong>em</strong>ents for a particular degree program.This graduate bulletin contains information on acad<strong>em</strong>ic and non-acad<strong>em</strong>ic policies, procedures, and requir<strong>em</strong>entswith which each student must become familiar. Students should consult the table of contents for guidance. Provisionsin this bulletin will not be valid after August <strong>2003</strong>.NOTICE OF NONDISCRIMINATORY POLICIES<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong> is in compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and does not discriminateon the basis of race, creed, color, or national origin. It is also in compliance with the provisions of Title IX of theEducational Amendments Act of 1972 which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex.It is the policy of the <strong>University</strong> that sexual harassment as defined in the EEOC Guidelines will not be toleratedamong m<strong>em</strong>bers of the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong> community. Any complaint of sexual harassment should bereported immediately to the appropriate person designated by the Provost/Senior Vice President for Acad<strong>em</strong>icAffairs or deans of the colleges and schools.NOTICE OF WEAPONS POLICYUnder <strong>Texas</strong> Penal Code Section 46.03, citizens may obtain licenses to carry concealed handguns. Although this isthe case, firearms. fireworks. and explosives of any kind are NOT PERMITTED on the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong>Campus or other State-Owned Property, except in the possession of State Law Enforc<strong>em</strong>ent Officers. Violators willbe dismissed from the <strong>University</strong> and are subject to legal sanctions.UNIVERSITY COMMITMENT AND STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES<strong>University</strong> CommitmentOn June 17, 1973, the <strong>Texas</strong> Legislature designated <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong> as a “special purpose institution ofhigher education for urban programming.” Subsequent to this mandate, the designation and the university motto of“Excellence in Achiev<strong>em</strong>ent” were welded in order to formulate the institutional mission. Accordingly, the <strong>University</strong>is committed to the manag<strong>em</strong>ent of a comprehensive educational curriculum that will render the motto creditable.Student Responsibilities<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong> provides a student-centered learning environment in which students are afforded opportunitiesto practice self-discipline, to assume responsibilities as mature adults, and to enjoy certain freedoms. Whenstudents elect to enroll at the <strong>University</strong>, they also accept and agree to abide by the rules, regulations, and policiesby which the <strong>University</strong> is governed.
