FOREIGN LANGUAGE EXAMINATIONThe passing of a reading examination in one foreign language is required of degree applicants in those departments requiringa language. English is considered as a foreign language for foreign students who received their pre-college and collegeeducation in a non-English language.COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONEach degree or certificate applicant is required to pass a comprehensive examination, either oral or written ( or both), exceptfor students seeking the Master of Business Administration degree.TIME LIMIT FOR THE MASTER’S DEGREECredits earned more than six years prior to the date of completion of master’s degree requir<strong>em</strong>ents at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong>cannot be accepted toward the satisfaction of master’s degree requir<strong>em</strong>ents. All courses which are submitted tosatisfy the s<strong>em</strong>ester-hour requir<strong>em</strong>ent for the master’s degree or the professional certificate in a program requiring 30 to 36s<strong>em</strong>ester hours must have been taken within a six-year period from the date of initial admission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School. Allprograms in excess of 36 s<strong>em</strong>ester hours will have a seven-year limit from the end of the acad<strong>em</strong>ic or session or s<strong>em</strong>esterin which the student first enrolled. This applies to residence, extension, and transfer work including work in the major andminor area. Courses that fall beyond the time limit must be repeated.REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETIONOF DOCTORAL DEGREESDOCTOR OF EDUCATION DEGREETo receive the degree, the student must:1. Be admitted unconditionally to the Doctor of Education degree program.2. Satisfy residency requir<strong>em</strong>ent for two consecutive s<strong>em</strong>esters of full-time residence or an approvedequivalency.3. In addition to the two years of professional experience required for admission, meet the internship requir<strong>em</strong>entof two consecutive s<strong>em</strong>esters. if required in the degree program.4. Satisfy the special course and research requir<strong>em</strong>ents for the degree program including at least forty-eight (48)s<strong>em</strong>ester hours of doctoral level course work within the 60-hour minimum doctoral program requir<strong>em</strong>ent.5. Pass the comprehensive examination.6. Be admitted to candidacy for the doctorate degree.7. Prepare an acceptable abstract, proposal and dissertation.8. Pass a final oral examination. The oral examination will be a defense of the doctoral dissertation and othertopics that may be designated by the Dissertation Committee.9. Present three approved copies of the doctoral dissertation in final form and three copies of the abstractto the <strong>Graduate</strong> Office.10. Apply for graduation.All dissertations will be microfilmed by <strong>University</strong> Microfilms. Inc. and the student must pay the microfilming fee whichprovides for microfilming of the complete dissertation and for publication of an abstract not to exceed 350 words. Theoriginal and one copy of the dissertation are placed in the <strong>University</strong> Library. The other copy is sent to the College of Education.ADVISORY COMMITTEEWhen the applicant is admitted to the Doctor of Education degree program. he/she is assigned a course work advisor andan advisory committee; together they prepare a degree plan which must be approved by the College of Education and the<strong>Graduate</strong> School. The degree plan should be filed not later than the end of the first s<strong>em</strong>ester after the student enrolls in theDoctoral Program.DISSERTATION ADVISORThe dissertation advisor is recommended to the Dean of the <strong>Graduate</strong> School by the department chairperson. Generally,the course advisor will also serve as the dissertation advisor. However, depending upon the field of concentration and/or thearea of the dissertation research, a different advisor may be appointed.31
