ES 925 RESEARCH AND DISSERTATION (3-12) Supervised research and dissertation preparation.ES 926 INTERNSHIP (6) Supervised student participation in an assigned internship to gain practical knowledge and experiencein environmental toxicological work.Through a cooperative program with the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Texas</strong>-Houston Health Science Center, students in the environmentaltoxicology program may register for approved courses at the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Texas</strong>-Houston Health Science Center.…………………………………………………………….Math<strong>em</strong>atics…………………………………………………………….The Department of Math<strong>em</strong>atics offers courses leading to the Master of Science degree in Math<strong>em</strong>atics: (1) Acad<strong>em</strong>ic orProfessional Program (for two-year college teaching, careers in industry or government, or preparation for doctoral study)and (2) Secondary Teaching Program.AIMS AND OBJECTIVESThe Department of Math<strong>em</strong>atics considers three factors in planning its program: (1) the math<strong>em</strong>atics activities in the acad<strong>em</strong>icmainstream of the United States: (2) the philosophy, aims and objectives of the <strong>University</strong>; and the past experiencesof the students enrolled. In its graduate program, the Department seeks to accomplish the following objectives:1 . To provide math<strong>em</strong>atical training for el<strong>em</strong>entary and secondary teachers, particularly those in urban schools.2. To provide math<strong>em</strong>atical training for personnel in industry, government, and institutions of higher learning where highermath<strong>em</strong>atics is needed.3. To explore and use the most effective methods for educating math<strong>em</strong>atics major consistent with the objectives of theirdegree programs.4. To provide graduate students in math<strong>em</strong>atics an opportunity to engage in, research on new teaching methodology; thedevelopment of new teaching materials, preparation of expository papers; and exploration of new fundamental results.The ultimate aim of the staff in the Department of Math<strong>em</strong>atics is to prepare graduate students who are competent practitionersof math<strong>em</strong>atics as the result their understanding of math<strong>em</strong>atical theory, and who are capable of serving as researchers,teachers, or applied math<strong>em</strong>aticians in various programs of industrial business and government.ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSStudents entering the graduate program are expected to have completed 21 s<strong>em</strong>ester hours of math<strong>em</strong>atics, including at leasttwelve (12) hours of calculus, at least 12 hours from the following (or courses equivalent to these): Math<strong>em</strong>atics 330, 333,336,439, 462, 460, 473. Additional work and s<strong>em</strong>ester hours may be required for students who have not completed thesecourses. Any exceptions to these requir<strong>em</strong>ents must be approved by the department’s graduate committee. The requir<strong>em</strong>entsfor the master’s degree in math<strong>em</strong>atics are as follows:1. An examination on the fundamentals of math<strong>em</strong>atics before admission to candidacy.A minimum of thirty s<strong>em</strong>ester hours of graduate work. Some 400-level courses can be counted toward the master’sdegree, but at most two such courses. An acceptable thesis on the subject approved by both the Department of Math<strong>em</strong>aticsand the <strong>Graduate</strong> School.
