Health and Human PerformanceThe Department of Health and Kinesiology offers two graduate degrees: the Master of Science in Health and the Master ofScience in Human Performance. The objectives of these programs are to prepare students for:1. additional study leading to the terminal degree.2. service in urban, multicultural environments.3. managing wellness; and health related fitness programs.4. various coaching fields.DOCTORAL PROGRAMSDOCTORAL CENTER FOR PROGRAMS INURBAN EDUCATIONIn July, 1997, the <strong>Texas</strong> Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) authorized the <strong>University</strong> to establish, in theCollege of Education, the Doctoral Center for Urban Education. The Doctoral Center has the primary responsibility forconceptualizing, developing and fostering collaboration among the several doctoral program areas in education, linkingstudent dissertations, faculty research, and investigation of a broad array of probl<strong>em</strong>s encountered by public and privateschool educators, in their quest to improve the educative process.The Center is the general research framework under which the three doctoral programs, Counselor Education, Curriculumand Instruction and Educational Leadership and Policy will function. The mission of the Center is to significantly increasethe number of graduates who will study policy, practice and education related issues end<strong>em</strong>ic to urban communities. <strong>Graduate</strong>sof the Center will be prepared to serve in a number of arenas such as school districts, other educational settings, ingovernment and medical institutions, foundations, and private practice. Collaboration between faculty and students linkfaculty research, dissertations, and reflective practice. The Center is staffed by a cadre of core professors who work directlywith doctoral studentsEducational AdministrationThe Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling offers a program leading to the Doctor of Education degree inEducational Administration. The program consists of prescribed sets of knowledge and skills that the student is expectedto develop.Educational Administration encompasses knowledge and skills from entities which either provide, regulate, or affect theformalized educational efforts of Society. Thus, innovative, flexible approaches utilizing courses, s<strong>em</strong>inars, field experiences,research projects, and other educational media are used to provide the technical, conceptual, and human skillsrequired of educational leaders. Under the direction of the student’s doctoral advisory committee, course plans are developedto meet individual needs, backgrounds, and future goals of each student.Field experience opportunities are available to help students relate acad<strong>em</strong>ic and theoretical work to the issues and concernsof administrative practices.Counselor EducationThe Doctor of Education degree program in Counselor Education is designed to prepare graduates who are highly competentin professional counseling skills in research as well as produce effective leaders in educational and human servicesarenas in the urban community. Building upon the prerequisite of a relevant master’s degree, the doctoral student is provideda series of acad<strong>em</strong>ic, laboratory, and internship experiences aimed at the development of a broad base in educationalfoundations, a specialization in counseling, and additional breadth in preparation through exposure to a supporting arearelated to the field of the major. The minimum requir<strong>em</strong>ent for the doctoral degree is sixty (60) s<strong>em</strong>ester hours, plus six (6)hours of doctoral dissertation.113
