The program is structured to offer students a broad-based survey of the literary canon, whileengaging th<strong>em</strong> in an in-depth study of major literary genre. Emphasizing the transmission of history, canonic plac<strong>em</strong>entand critical reception of the works of major authors, the program provides students myriad opportunities to apply variousmethods of literary research. The primary aim of the curriculum is to prepare graduates to assume roles as scholars andteachers in the area of literature.ADMISSION CRITERIAApplicants to the Master of Arts in English must be admitted to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School of <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Theadmissions review process entails meeting all of the specified criteria of the <strong>Graduate</strong> School and those specified for admissionto the <strong>Graduate</strong> Program of the Department of English, Foreign Languages and Reading. To receive full admissionstatus to the graduate curriculum in English, students must meet the following criteria:1. a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 in under graduate studies and a 3.0 in undergraduate literary studies;2. completion of 12 s<strong>em</strong>ester hours of foreign language in the undergraduate curriculum; and3. applicants must present a <strong>Graduate</strong> Record Examination (GRE) scores (combined verbal and quantitative)which are considered along with the applicant’s undergraduate grade point average. In addition to the aboverequir<strong>em</strong>ents, the socioeconomic background of applicants will be considered in the admission process.a. Economic status of family when applicant was in el<strong>em</strong>entary, secondary,and undergraduate school.b. Applicant was first generation to attend undergraduate school.c. Applicant was first generation to attend graduate or professional school.d. Applicant is multi-lingual.e. Applicant was <strong>em</strong>ployed while attending undergraduate school.f. Applicant helped to raise other children in family.g. Geographic residence in <strong>Texas</strong> of applicant at time of application.h. Geographic region in which applicants high school is located.i. Applicant d<strong>em</strong>onstrated performance in community activities.j. Applicant has d<strong>em</strong>onstrated commitment to a particular field of study.k. The presence or absence of role models with comparable graduate school trainingin the applicant’s region of residence.l. The applicant’s performance during a personal interview.75
