College of Liberal Arts andBehavioral Sciences…………………………………………Communications…………………………………………The Department of Communications currently offers one graduate degree, the Master of Arts in Communications with twocurricular choices: Mass Communications and Speech Communications. In offering this degree, the Department seeks toachieve the following objectives:1. To prepare students for further study toward the Ph.D. degree.2. To train students in the techniques used by mass communication media so that they may enter communicationfields as practicing professionals with a potential for upward mobility.3. To provide upper-level service courses to public school and junior college teachers seeking either professionalcertification or a master’s degree for teachers offered through the College of EducationADMISSIONS CRITERIAIn addition to the general requir<strong>em</strong>ents for admission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School (see the General Information Section of thiscatalog), applicants for admission to graduate standing in Communications are expected to present evidence of havingcompleted a minimum of twenty-one (21) undergraduate s<strong>em</strong>ester credit hours above the freshman level in their chosenoption.DEGREE REQUIREMENTSMaster of Arts in CommunicationFulfillment of the general requir<strong>em</strong>ents for graduation as outlined in the General Information Section of the <strong>Graduate</strong> SchoolBulletin, and specific requir<strong>em</strong>ents for the Master of Arts in Communications as summarized below:• Completion of thirty (30) s<strong>em</strong>ester credit hours of graduate level courses (usually 500 level or above), fifteen(15) of which will be Communication core courses and fifteen (15) in the chosen area of specialization;• Satisfactory performance on the written comprehensive examination prior to enrolling in the research or internshipcomponents; and• Thesis option: Completion and presentation, through oral defense, of a thesis before a committee composed ofm<strong>em</strong>bers of the Department of Communications and representatives of the <strong>Graduate</strong> School; or• Non-thesis option: Completion of a full-time internship in the media industry (Telecommunications Administration).CURRICULUM SUMMARYMaster of Arts in CommunicationsThe Department Communications offers two programs leading to the Master’s degree:1. Plan A - Master of Arts degree - a minimum of thirty (33) s<strong>em</strong>ester credit hours of course work and an acceptableresearch project.2. Plan B - Master of Arts - a minimum of thirty-six (36) s<strong>em</strong>ester credit hours including internship.Students who select either Plan A or B must meet the general requir<strong>em</strong>ents for all graduate students as prescribed in thisbulletin. Degree plans must be approved by the graduate program advisor prior to submission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School.68
