Schedule 1 The <strong>Criminal</strong> <strong>Code</strong>Part 6 Offences relating to property and contractsChapter 49 Punishment of forgery and like offences[s 501]501 False statements for the purpose of registers of births,deaths, and marriagesAny person who knowingly, and with intent to procure thesame to be inserted in a register of births, deaths, ormarriages, makes any false statement touching any matterrequired by law to be registered in any such register, is guiltyof a misdemeanour, and is liable to imprisonment for 3 years.501A Contradictory statementsIf, on the trial for a person under section 501, the jury issatisfied—(a) the accused has made 2 statements and 1 isirreconcilably in conflict with the other; and(b) the accused made 1 of the statements knowing it to befalse;but the jury is unable to say which statement was falselymade, the jury may make a special finding to that effect andfind the accused guilty of the offence.502 Procuring or claiming unauthorised statusAny person who—(a) by any false representation procures any authorityauthorised by any statute to issue certificates testifyingthat the holders thereof are entitled to any right orprivilege, or to enjoy any rank or status, to issue tohimself, herself or any other person any such certificate;or(b) falsely represents to any person that the person hasobtained any certificate issued by any such authority; or(c) by any false representation procures himself, herself orany other person to be registered on any register kept bylawful authority as a person entitled to such a certificate,Current as at 1 December 2014 Page 309
