DLL (Dynamic Link Library)A program module that is linked <strong>and</strong> loaded in runtime. For aWindows-based system, program segments are stored away fromthe main .exe program in files with .dll extensions. Use of DLLsdecreases the required size of the main program. DLLs can beshared among many programs.DNIS (Dialed Number Identification Service)The digits received at the beginning of a call indicating the numberthat the caller dialed. For example, if a company has several 800numbers for various departments <strong>and</strong> the numbers come in on onetrunk, DNIS enables the ACD or switch to route the call to thecorrect department by identifying the initial digits.DPNSS 1 (Digital Private Network Signalling System 1)A British st<strong>and</strong>ard in which PBXs from different manufacturers canbe connected with E1 lines then transparently pass calls betweenthemselves. DPNSS 1 is the predecessor of <strong>ISDN</strong>, <strong>and</strong> is primarilyused in the United Kingdom. See QSIG or Euro-<strong>ISDN</strong>.DTE (data terminating equipment)The data interface offered by terminal equipment.DTMF (dual tone multi-frequency)A combination of a high-frequency tone <strong>and</strong> a low-frequency tonecreated when a key on a telephone keypad is pressed. DTMF tonesare used for touchtone dialing <strong>and</strong> for selecting choices from aninteractive menu presented through the telephone system. See alsorotary dialing.E1A digital transmission link used by European <strong>and</strong> other CEPTcarriers; the rate these carriers use to transmit thirty 64-kbps digitalchannels for voice or data calls, plus a 64-kbps channel for signaling<strong>and</strong> a 64-kbps channel for framing <strong>and</strong> maintenance.
