While prior participation inECE remained higher for European > Asian > Māori > Pacific children, prior participationincreased for all ethnic groups during 2001–2011 (European children 94.9% to 97.8%;Asian children 89.8% to 95.9%; Māori children 83.6% to 90.0%; and Pacific children 76.0%to 86.2% (Figure 36)).Distribution by School Socioeconomic DecileIn New Zealand during 2011, 18.0% of children attending schools in the most deprived(decile 1) areas had not attended ECE prior to school entry, as compared to only 1.0% ofchildren attending schools in the least deprived (decile 10) areas. Nevertheless thesefigures suggest that on average, 82.0% of children attending schools in the most deprivedareas had attended some form of ECE prior to school entry (Figure 37).Midland Region Distribution and TrendsMidland Region TrendsDuring 2001–2011, prior participation in ECE amongst school entrants increased in allDHBs in the Midland region, with prior participation rates in the Waikato and Bay of Plentybeing similar to the New Zealand rate, while rates in Lakes DHB and Tairawhiti weregenerally lower. Prior participation in <strong>Taranaki</strong> was slightly higher than the New Zealandrate during the mid to late 2000s (Figure 38).Distribution by EthnicityIn the Waikato during 2001–2011, prior participation in ECE amongst school entrants wasgenerally higher for European children than for Māori or Pacific children, while in LakesDHB, the Bay of Plenty, Tairawhiti and <strong>Taranaki</strong>, rates were higher for European than forMāori children (Figure 39).Early Childhood Education - 111
