During 1999–2011, while daily smokingrates declined for students of all ethnic groups, ratesremained higher for Māori > Pacific > European andAsian studentsDaily smoking rates were higher for students attendingschools in the most deprived (deciles 1–3) > average(deciles 4–7) > least deprived (deciles 8–10) areas.While smoking rates were higher for females, genderdifferences diminished as the level of deprivationdecreased. Daily smoking rates declined for students ofall socioeconomic groups during 1999–2011.In the 2009 NZ Tobacco Use Survey the proportion ofyoung people aged 20–24 years (30.7%) who werecurrent smokers was significantly higher than for thoseaged 15–19 years (18.0%).When compared to the total population, current smokingrates for Māori young people 15–19 years (RR 2.15 95%CI 1.62–2.67) were significantly higher, while rates forAsian young people were significantly lower (RR 0.2495% CI 0.00–0.70). Rates for Pacific andEuropean/Other young people were not significantlydifferent from the total population rate.Current smoking rates for young people aged 15–19years from the most deprived (NZDep deciles 9–10)areas (30.9% 95% CI 22.6–39.3) were significantlyhigher than for those form the least deprived (NZDepdeciles 1−2) areas (10.0% 95% CI 4.2–19.2).Current smokers aged 15–19 years indicated the mostcommon way of sourcing tobacco in the past month wasto buy it themselves (79.3% 95% CI 70.7–87.9),although other sources of tobacco were friends (27.6%95% CI 18.9−36.2) or family (22.9% 95% CI 14.7–31.1).In all of the DHBs in the Midland Region during 1999–2011,the proportion of Year 10 students who were daily smokersdeclined, while the proportion who had never smokedincreased. In the Bay of Plenty, Lakes DHB and Tairawhiti,the proportion of students who were daily smokers wasgenerally higher than the New Zealand rate, while theproportion who had never smoked was lower. In the Waikatoand <strong>Taranaki</strong>, rates for both measures were more similar tothe New Zealand rate.Introduction and Overview - 37
