Midland Region Distribution and TrendsMidland Region vs. New ZealandIn the Midland Region during 2009–2011, the proportion of students staying on at schooluntil at least 17 years of age increased for students from all DHBs except <strong>Taranaki</strong>, withretention rates in the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Lakes DHB and Tairawhiti being generallylower than the New Zealand rate, while rates in <strong>Taranaki</strong> were similar to the New Zealandrate. By 2011, 75.7% of Waikato, 76.1% of Bay of Plenty, 72.9% of Lakes DHB, 76.5% ofTairawhiti and 78.6% of <strong>Taranaki</strong> students stayed on at school until at least 17 years ofage (Figure 50).Distribution by EthnicityIn the Waikato during 2009–2011, a higher proportion of Asian > European and Pacific >Māori students stayed on at school until at least 17 years of age, while in the Bay ofPlenty, Lakes DHB, Tairawhiti and <strong>Taranaki</strong>, retention rates at 17 years were higher forEuropean than for Māori students (Figure 51).Local Policy Documents and Evidence-Based ReviewsRelevant to Educational Participation in Young PeopleEducational participation is influenced by a range of factors including a student’s previouseducational experiences and engagement with the education system. In this context,Table 14 on Page 114 provides an overview of publications which are relevant to earlychildhood education, while Table 18 on Page 122 reviews publications which considerinitiatives to improve the educational participation and attainment of Māori students. Inaddition, Table 20 on Page 144 reviews publications relevant to the prevention of standdowns,suspensions, exclusions and expulsions, while Table 21 on Page 151 considerspublications relevant to truancy and unjustified absences.
