Participation in Tertiary EducationDistribution by EthnicityEthnic differences in school retention rates at 17 years need to be viewed in the context ofthe alternative educational opportunities available to students. During 2001–2010, a largenumber of students participated in tertiary education, with participation rates for Māoristudents being high in Certificate Level 1–3 courses (Figure 49). While tertiaryparticipation rates also include those 25+ years, such figures suggest that for many, participation in formal education does not cease at school leaving, although the incomepremiums achieved for completing various types of study need to be taken intoconsideration when assessing the longer term impacts educational participation has oneconomic security.Note: Information on regional tertiary participation rates is not provided, due to the largeshifts in the New Zealand youth population which occur after 17 years of age, when youngpeople move from regional areas to large urban centres to take advantage of tertiary studyopportunities. Thus regional participation rates are likely to reflect the number and type oftertiary institutions available in a region, rather than the participation rates of young peoplewho have grown up in the Midland Region, and/or who return to the region during theirstudy breaks or vacations.Figure 49.
