Maternal Smoking at First Registration with a LMCNew Zealand Distribution Number of Cigarettes SmokedIn New Zealand during 2009–2010, 15.3% of babies did not have their mother’s smokingstatus at first LMC registration recorded in the National Maternity Collection, with themajority of omissions being for babies whose mothers were not registered with a LMC atdelivery. Of those babies whose mother’s smoking status was known, 83.5% had a nonsmokingmother, while 10.5% had a mother who smoked less than 10 cigarettes per dayand 6.0% had a mother who smoked 10 or more cigarettes per day (Table 29).Table 29. A significantly higher proportion of babies from average to more deprivedareas (NZDep06 deciles 3–10 vs. deciles 1–2) also had mothers who smoked at first LMCregistration (Figure 85, Table 30).New Zealand Distribution by Maternal Age and EthnicityIn New Zealand during 2009–2010, when broken down by maternal age and baby’sethnicity, the mothers of Māori babies, regardless of maternal age, had higher smokingrates at first LMC registration than the mothers of European or Pacific babies, while thematernal smoking rates of Asian/Indian babies were lower. In addition, maternal smokingrates for European babies were higher than for Pacific babies with younger mothers (lessthan 27 years), although differences were less marked for those with older mothers(Figure 86).Smoking in Pregnancy - 190
