A lower proportion of European childrenlived in sole parent households than Pacific or Asianchildren in the least deprived (NZDep deciles 1–3) areas,although a higher proportion lived in sole parenthouseholds in the most deprived (NZDep deciles 9–10)areas.In New Zealand during 2006, 16.5% of children andyoung people aged 0–24 years lived in a crowdedhousehold.Overall, 50.1% of Pacific and 27.8% of Māori childrenand young people lived in crowded households, ascompared to 22.8% of Asian and 5.8% of Europeanchildren and young people.The proportion of children and young people living incrowded households increased from 2.8% for those inthe least deprived (NZDep decile 1) areas, to 42.4% forthose in the most deprived (NZDep decile 10) areasWhile the proportion of children and young people livingin crowded households increased with increasing NZDepdeprivation for each of New Zealand’s largest ethnicgroups, at each level of deprivation, the proportion washigher for Pacific > Asian and Māori > European childrenand young people.In the Waikato during 2006, 27.0% of children aged 0–14years lived in sole parent households, as compared to 31.4%in Lakes DHB, 29.4% in the Bay of Plenty, 36.3% in Tairawhitiand 25.8% in <strong>Taranaki</strong>.In the Waikato, a higher proportion of Māori > Pacific >European and Asian children lived in sole parent households,while in Lakes DHB, the Bay of Plenty, Tairawhiti and<strong>Taranaki</strong>, a higher proportion of Māori than European childrenlived in a sole parent household.In all of the DHBs in the Midland Region, the proportion ofchildren living in sole parent households increased withincreasing NZDep deprivation, with the highest rates beingseen in children living in the most deprived (NZDep decile 10)areas. Amongst those living in the most deprived areas, theproportion living in sole parent households was 50.0% in theWaikato, 49.9% in the Bay of Plenty, 54.4% in Lakes DHB,53.0% in Tairawhiti and 53.6% in <strong>Taranaki</strong>.In the Waikato during 2006, 15.6% of children and youngpeople lived in crowded households, as compared to 18.8% inLakes DHB, 16.4% in the Bay of Plenty, 23.3% in Tairawhitiand 10.7% in <strong>Taranaki</strong>.A higher proportion of Waikato Pacific > Māori > Asian >European children and young people lived in crowdedhouseholds, while in Lakes DHB, the Bay of Plenty, Tairawhitiand <strong>Taranaki</strong> a higher proportion of Māori than Europeanchildren and young people lived in crowded households.In all of the DHBs in the Midland Region during 2006, theproportion living in crowded households increased withincreasing NZDep deprivation, with the highest rates beingseen in those from the most deprived (NZDep decile 10)areas.
