Children and Young People Survey226. Health and fitness gyms were the facility most frequently used by about 8% ofyoung people and 3% of children, and there are aspirations for more of thesefacilities.227. This survey also highlighted the need for facilities to be tailored and welcoming toyoung people, and for them to be more easily accessible.Market Segmentation228. The Market Segmentation findings suggest that of the predominant groups in<strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent, only the ‘Comfortable Mid-life Males’ are particularly attracted to‘gym’ activities. However the ‘Sports Team Drinkers’ are attracted toweightlifting, boxing and martial arts, and the ‘Pub League Team Mates’ wouldbe interested in weightlifting, boxing and karate. Although these segments donot predominate across the whole of the City, there are sufficient numbers in allareas to justify health and fitness facilities – particularly facilities which havemulti-purposes spaces and can provide for boxing and martial arts in addition tothe more ‘usual’ fitness stations found in many commercial fitness facilities. These need to be cheaper than the commercial fitness sector provision, ideallyallowing casual or pay and play use rather than requiring subscriptionmembership which is paid in advance.Nortoft Partnerships Ltd <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent Page | 183Sport & Physical Activity Strategy 2009-2016October 2009
