26. For the purposes of this report, a comparison has been made between thecurrent population and the 2021 population. The population projectionsbeyond the 10 year horizon become increasingly uncertain, therefore theStrategy is based on projections up to 2021, to tie in with the next main datein the statutory planning calendar. The most noticeable change in populationwill be the increase in the older age groups (50+). The numbers of thoseaged 0-14 and 25-34 are also set to rise. Conversely, numbers of those aged15-24 and 35-49 are expected to decrease.Figure 4: Change in age structure up to 2021(Source: ONS)Black Minority and Ethnic (BME)27. Analysing the BME population is necessary since cultural background canoften impact upon levels of participation in a particular sport or activerecreation activity.28. The following key facts have been derived from the 2001 Census:• The population of <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent is predominantly white British (94.8%);• The BME community accounts for 5.2% of the population;• The largest BME groups in the district are Pakistani (2.6%) and ‘otherwhite’ (0.8%).29.
