• Engaging with residents of all ages where they live often in untraditionalsettings rather than expecting everyone to take part at dedicated majorsports facilities. This may include community centres, parks and openspaces.14. A high priority is the development of the concept of virtual Sports Villages,with a pilot being based in and around Burslem (the Northern Sports Village).This will focus on community participation and bring together a number ofdifferent types of sport and recreation facilities and various community andprivate sector partners. These partners will include amongst others:Dimensions Leisure Centre, Port Vale FC, <strong>Stoke</strong> Gymnastics Club, BurslemPark and Haywood High School. The new partnership will seek to maximiseopportunities for both the local community and <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent as a whole inrelation to the provision for high level sport. It will support new facilitydevelopment and agree priorities for local investment. The Northern SportsVillage Partnership concept now needs to be taken forward, initially by ascoping study which will include the testing of the ‘boundaries’ of the proposal.Arising from this, it is possible that the area will be expanded to incorporateother locations such as James Brindley and Brownhills schools. It is intendedthat the concept will be replicated in other parts of <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent with aSouthern Sports Village centred around Sandon.15. The concept will be developed further with the introduction of the proposedFenton “Performance Sports Village” which is about creating a range of highspecification and quality sports facilities that will accommodate sport fromgrass roots through to the performance level. It will have the support of anumber of major organisations such as the relevant National GoverningBodies of Sport, Staffordshire University, the Sixth Form College, <strong>Stoke</strong>College, and NHS <strong>Stoke</strong> on Trent.16. The Fenton Manor site and adjoining land is currently subject to detailedfeasibility studies to determine the locations and sizes of the new school andPE Curriculum Building (University and Sixth Form), and the options toprovide other sports facilities. Ensuring that the facilities on site at FentonManor are capable of sustaining the overall levels of demand fromcommunity, school and University / Sixth Form use will be an important aspectof this.17. The Southern Sports Village is based on a similar principle to that of theNorthern Sports Village, with the base/hub of the project being Sandon HighSchool Sports Centre (Centre of Excellence for Cricket). The purpose is tobring together the community sports organisations in the south of the city toincrease participation levels. Partners are likely to include the primaryschools, high schools, Foley Football Club, Children’s Centres, LongtonRUFC, Blurton Dads, Blurton Lads and Dads, and Trentham Boat Club.Nortoft Partnerships Ltd <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent Page | 42Sport & Physical Activity Strategy 2009 – 2016October 2009
Capacity building18. This theme includes:• Developing more coaches, sports administrators and officials to work bothwithin the traditional sports sector and in newer alternative settings;• Providing opportunities to volunteer in all areas of sport (for example,clubs, events and schools) and help volunteers find fulfilling placementswhere they can make the biggest difference;• Developing the way in which sports based volunteering is used in the Cityto help extend the range of opportunities available to local people to takepart in sport;• Providing opportunities for local people to volunteer, access training, gainnew qualifications and obtain employment through sport.19. Action under this heading includes the proposed employment of a dedicatedofficer to coordinate the recruitment, training, deployment and rewarding ofvolunteers building on elements of existing programmes like Closing the Gap.20. Many clubs require significant support to enable them to grow their sport in aprogressive and sustainable manner, and achieving accredited club status.<strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent City Council is working with Sport Across Staffordshire and<strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent (SASSOT) to implement the partnership’s “workforcedevelopment strategy”. The courses currently offered to clubs are wideranging,from 1 st aid and equity coaching, to Volunteer Centre generic supportcourses for improving the volunteers’ skill base.21. The volunteer base of clubs is also crucial to the ability of clubs to take on,develop and manage facilities themselves. Good examples are the rugbyclubs, who have traditionally managed their own sites and who dependheavily on volunteer time for pitch and building maintenance.Supporting the voluntary sector22.
