26. For the purposes of this report, a comparison has been made between thecurrent population and the 2021 population. The population projectionsbeyond the 10 year horizon become increasingly uncertain, therefore theStrategy is based on projections up to 2021, to tie in with the next main datein the statutory planning calendar. The most noticeable change in populationwill be the increase in the older age groups (50+). The numbers of thoseaged 0-14 and 25-34 are also set to rise. Conversely, numbers of those aged15-24 and 35-49 are expected to decrease.Figure 4: Change in age structure up to 2021(Source: ONS)Black Minority and Ethnic (BME)27. Analysing the BME population is necessary since cultural background canoften impact upon levels of participation in a particular sport or activerecreation activity.28. The following key facts have been derived from the 2001 Census:• The population of <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent is predominantly white British (94.8%);• The BME community accounts for 5.2% of the population;• The largest BME groups in the district are Pakistani (2.6%) and ‘otherwhite’ (0.8%).29. The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) 200730. The Index of Multiple Deprivation is a single deprivation score for each LowerSuper Output Area (LSOA) in the country, and combines several indicatorscovering economic, social and housing issues. The following key points havearisen regarding <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent:• <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent is the 22 nd most deprived district in the country and thesecond most deprived in the West Midlands region;• 32.2% of <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent’s population live in the country’s most deprived10%, found in 53 different LSOAs;• A further 21.1% live in the 10%-20% most deprived areas, found in 32 of<strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent’s 160 LSOAs;• This means that over half of <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent’s population live in thecountry’s most deprived 20%.31.
