FootballOverview34. Football has traditionally been played on grass pitches, but since the adventof 3 rd Generation synthetic turf pitches, the adult game has increasinglyshifted towards the use of these surfaces together with a focus on the smallsidedgame.35. This section of the strategy reviews the demand for grass football pitches,whilst the synthetic pitches are addressed under the built facilities section ofthe report. The assessment considers the key issues facing the sport, andthe unique opportunities to improve the current pitch stock due to theproposed schools reorganisation.Football demand on grass36. The assessment of the demand for football pitches on grass is based uponthe number of teams registered in <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent for the season 2007-08 withthe Football Association. The following are the key facts drawn from thelatest Staffordshire FA report, Local Area Data <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent Season2007/08.37. The number of people playing football on grass has been compared with thenational rates. Figure 3 shows that participation in football in <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trentis generally behind that of the England average, and that participation hasfallen for junior (youth) male football and adult male football on grass betweenthe seasons 2006/07 and 2007/08.
