Stoke-on-trent sport and physical activity strategy 2009-2016

Outdoor TennisIntroduction264. Tennis as a sport was historically strong in <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent but has suffered adecline in recent years, with a reduction in clubs and in courts across the City.Tennis was however the main activity which emerged from the household surveyas being in more demand and this also emerged from the Elected Mayor’s GreenPaper although less strongly. The proposals in this section therefore attempt toaddress how to reverse the decline in tennis and to maximise the apparentunmet demand for the sport.265. The characteristics of those playing tennis are given above in the section relatingto indoor tennis provision. In summary, the sport attracts men and womenequally, and most players are from socio-economic groups ABC1. The highestparticipation rates are among those aged 16-24 years. This suggests that theareas of the City most likely to have the strongest interest in tennis are in thesouth west around Trentham and in the south east below the Edensor HighSchool site.Current provision266. There are currently 40 outdoor courts in <strong>Stoke</strong>-on-Trent. This equates to aprovision of 0.17 courts per 1000 population.
