1898 cont Marie (1867-1934) <strong>and</strong> Pierre (1859-1906) Curie (French scientists) obtained<br />

radium from pitchblende.<br />

Barbitone first used as a sedative.<br />

"Tropical Diseases", by Patrick Manson (see 1879), published.<br />

1899 Start <strong>of</strong> the Boer War (1899-1902) in which 9.5 soldiers per 1000 were killed in action,<br />

3.3 died from wounds <strong>and</strong> 20.4 died from diseases.<br />

London Government Act (62&63 Vict., c.14) created 28 London metropolitan<br />

boroughs from the existing vestries <strong>and</strong> limited the powers <strong>of</strong> the London County Council.<br />

This remained the structure <strong>of</strong> local government in London until 1965. See 1963.<br />

Infectious Disease (Notification) Act (62&63 Vict., c.8) made notification <strong>of</strong> the<br />

prescribed diseases (see 1889) compulsory throughout Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Wales. A similar measure<br />

was passed for Scotl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Education Act (62&63 Vict., c.33) set up the Board <strong>of</strong> Education in 1900 to<br />

coordinate the work <strong>of</strong> higher grade elementary schools, county technical schools <strong>and</strong><br />

endowed grammar schools, taking over these responsibilities from the Privy Council; <strong>and</strong> to<br />

provide for a register <strong>of</strong> teachers. See 1918.<br />

Elementary Education (School Attendance) Act (1893) Amendment Act (62&63 Vict.,<br />

c.13) raised school leaving age to 12 years. See 1901 <strong>and</strong> 1918.<br />

Elementary Education (Defective <strong>and</strong> Epileptic Children) Act (62&63 Vict., c.32)<br />

empowered local authorities to set up special schools <strong>and</strong> classes for these children. See<br />

1914.<br />

Small Dwellings Act (62&63 Vict., c.44) empowered local authorities to advance<br />

money to persons to enable them to acquire the ownership <strong>of</strong> small houses in which they<br />

resided. See 1980.<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> Port <strong>Health</strong> Authorities (later Association <strong>of</strong> Sea <strong>and</strong> Airport <strong>Health</strong><br />

Authorities) founded.<br />

The London School <strong>of</strong> Tropical <strong>Medicine</strong> opened next to the Seamen's Hospital (see<br />

1769) at the Royal Albert Dock. See 1905 <strong>and</strong> 1929.<br />

Coal Smoke Abatement Society founded in London. See 1909.<br />

Aspirin introduced by Bayer.<br />

1900 - 1901<br />

1900 Housing <strong>of</strong> the Working Classes Act (63&64 Vict. c.59) extended the powers, given to<br />

London in the 1890 act in regard to acquiring l<strong>and</strong> for long-term planning for erecting houses,<br />

to the provincial boroughs. See 1903.<br />

Between 1900 <strong>and</strong> 1901 about 14,000 soldiers were given typhoid vaccine (Boer War).<br />

Plague became notifiable.<br />

Walter Reed (1851-1902, US Army doctor) proved that yellow fever was transmitted to<br />

man by the bite <strong>of</strong> the mosquito, aedes aegypti, <strong>and</strong> in 1901 that the agent was a virus.<br />

JJBV Bordet (1870-1961, Belgian immunologist) <strong>and</strong> O Gengou (1875-1957)<br />

discovered antibodies.<br />

K L<strong>and</strong>steiner (1868-1943, American pathologist)) identified the four main blood<br />

groups.
