1919 cont University Grants Committee established as an independent st<strong>and</strong>ing committee<br />

to allocate the government's grant between universities, which for the first time exceeded £1<br />

million .<br />

E Rutherford (later Lord, 1871-1937, physicist at Manchester <strong>and</strong> Cambridge<br />

universities) changed the atomic nucleus by bombarding nitrogen with alpha particles,<br />

thereby artificially transmuting an element.<br />

"An Outline <strong>of</strong> the Practice <strong>of</strong> Preventive <strong>Medicine</strong>" by Sir George Newman (see<br />

above) published by the HMSO. Newman set out the principal elements <strong>of</strong> a national policy,<br />

including sanitation, industrial hygiene, health education, maternity <strong>and</strong> child welfare <strong>and</strong> the<br />

prevention <strong>of</strong> infectious <strong>and</strong> non-infectious diseases.<br />
