• You can save a lot of tome by optimizing your HAIR settings. Make sure your object really needs those 500,000
individual hairs – maybe half as many will suffice without sacrificing realism.
• A greater number of individual hairs are required when creating short hair (as was the case with Hairbert’s
fur) to prevent surfaces from showing through. Short hair, though, requires fewer segments because it is stiffer
by nature. Increasing the segment count for short hair is therefore unnecessary.
• The method of creating hair used in this tutorial is by far not the only method for creating good-looking hair.
You can, for example, experiment with the various HAIR modes when brushing hair (main menu: Hair / Mode
/ Points). Since guides behave differently when working in Point mode, as opposed to Tip mode, entirely new
possibilities for styling hair are made available.
• Experiment with the guides’ Segment setting. If you set the number of guide segments to 3 and the number
of hair segments to 20 the hair would be very bouncy and protrude a greater distance from the surface. The
rendered hairs would look round and have no corners. The hair will look like it hasn’t been shampooed for
several days.
