New Zealand Deaf Association €27.74 per hour, min. 2-hour chargeZealandDuring this review, no examples were found of voucher systems. Researchconducted in Britain a few years ago came to the conclusion that governmentshould consider the introduction of a voucher system which would entitle eachDeaf person to an agreed number of interpreting hours to be used in settings oftheir choice, over and above the central funding of interpreting services foressential public services (see Brien D, Brown R, Collins J. 2002). However, thisrecommendation has not been acted on.5.6.1 Information on fundingAs can be seen from the above information, funding for interpreting servicescan come from a variety of sources - central government, regional or localgovernment/authorities, private businesses, charities, service providers, or Deafpeople themselves. We are not in a position to provide exact figures for the costto the Deaf user or the service provider of providing interpreting services. Thereasons for this include the following:• None of the governments publish information on the total amount of moneyspent on interpreting services.• There is no centrally held information on the running costs for agencies, andinformation from the private sector could only be obtained by asking eachbusiness how much they spend and then totalling this. This informationwould be regarded as commercially sensitive.Review of Sign Language Interpretation Services and Service Requirements in Ireland • page 107
