Department of Social and Family AffairsThe Department formulates appropriate social protection policies, and administersand manages the delivery of statutory and non-statutory schemes and services.ComhairleComhairle is the national agency responsible for supporting the provision ofinformation, advice and advocacy to members of the public on social services.Comhairle has a particular remit to support people with disabilities in accessingtheir entitlements.Comhairle currently supports 42 Citizens Information Services, providinginformation on a wide range of social services from over 243 locations nationwide.Comhairle also supports the Citizens Information Phone Service. Comhairlehas developed the Citizens Information website as a source of information onpublic services.The Minister for Social and Family Affairs has power in the Comhairle Act 2000to request Comhairle to design schemes relating to social services in order toaddress needs identified by the Minister concerning such services. The Ministerhas requested Comhairle to prepare such a scheme relating to sign languageinterpretation services to be submitted for approval.Irish Sign LinkIrish Sign Link is Ireland's national sign language interpreter agency. Bookings canbe made through this one central agency. It provides interpreters for almost anysituation that requires sign language interpretation.Irish Sign Link is the largest booking agency in terms of overall activity. It currentlyemploys a small core team of two people and works with a pool of approximately44 interpreters. The primary activity of Irish Sign Link is booking sign languageinterpreters for anyone requiring such services in Ireland.Irish Association of Sign Language Interpreters (IASLI)IASLI is the National Association for Irish Sign Language Interpreters. It is avoluntary organisation. Members include Irish Sign Language/English interpreters,as well as Deaf members who relay interpret from Irish Sign Language to other signlanguages and in mental health settings. The association is a forum for interpreterspromoting Irish Sign Language/English interpreting in Ireland and abroad.Irish Deaf Society (IDS)IDS is an organisation that represents the interest of Deaf people in Ireland.The IDS was established in 1981 by the Deaf community of Ireland in responseto what they felt was a lack of quality in services for the Deaf rendered by non-Deaf organisations.The Irish Deaf Society strives to highlight the societal needs of all sections in theDeaf community, and advocates the human rights of Deaf people throughempowerment and achievement of equal access in all aspects of life endowed byfull Irish citizenship.
