Overview <strong>of</strong> the two phased approachComhairleIrish <strong>Sign</strong> <strong>Language</strong> <strong>Interpretation</strong> <strong>Service</strong>Role: Development <strong>and</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong> quality SLI services in Irel<strong>and</strong>Key Phase 1 functions would include:• Leading the development <strong>of</strong> SLI services• Leading the establishment <strong>and</strong>management <strong>of</strong> a central booking service• Website - with booking via email• Repository <strong>of</strong> relevant managementinformation on SLI services• Promoting SLI services• Contributing to policy etc.• Quality assurance• Technology assessment<strong>and</strong> pilot(s)Additional functions in Phase 2 would include:• Overseeing the rollout <strong>of</strong> a remote interpreting service including promotingthe service amongst the Deaf community <strong>and</strong> public service users• Ensuring provision is made for training Deaf people, public service users<strong>and</strong> interpreters in the use <strong>of</strong> the new technologyCentral booking serviceRole: Deliver a quality SLI booking serviceKey Phase 1 functions would include:• Comprehensive database <strong>of</strong> interpreters• Vetting <strong>of</strong> interpreters• Booking <strong>of</strong> interpreters (by phone, videophone, email etc.)• Some interpreters contracted/employed by the service to support accessto public services in areas currently poorly serviced by SLI interpretersAdditional Phase 2 functions would include:• Developing <strong>and</strong> running an effective remote interpreting service withaccess points for Deaf people <strong>and</strong> interpreters• Access to interpreters, during extended hours, via the remoteinterpreting service• A number <strong>of</strong> interpreters employed/contractedCollaborative Advisory RelationshipsSLI Advisory GroupIncluding for example,stakeholders from theDeaf community,representativeorganisations, advocacygroups, public serviceusers <strong>of</strong> SLI services,SLI service providers,interpreter association,international experts• Comhairle having a number <strong>of</strong> high level responsibilities in overseeing SLI services inIrel<strong>and</strong>, including:– Setting the strategic direction for SLI services in Irel<strong>and</strong>– Quality assurance - overseeing the development <strong>of</strong> an effective, qualityservice for SLI– Development funding for SLI services in Irel<strong>and</strong> - ensuring public money isefficiently deployed<strong>Review</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sign</strong> <strong>Language</strong> <strong>Interpretation</strong> <strong><strong>Service</strong>s</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Service</strong> Requirements in Irel<strong>and</strong> • page 19
