4 Messages from theConsultation4.1 INTRODUCTIONThe objective <strong>of</strong> this chapter is to feedback the key messages emerging from theconsultation process. This chapter is structured as follows:4.1 Introduction4.2 Background4.3-4.10 Themes 1-84.2 BACKGROUNDIn the brief for this review, Comhairle indicated that the review process shouldinclude consultation with major stakeholders, in order to establish their views oncurrent provision <strong>and</strong> the requirements <strong>of</strong> a good quality SLI service. The groupsto be consulted included the Deaf community, providers <strong>of</strong> SLI services, relevantvoluntary/community <strong>and</strong> statutory providers.The consultation process was designed in partnership with Comhairle, <strong>and</strong> withthe assistance <strong>and</strong> advice <strong>of</strong> the Irish Deaf Society, National Association for DeafPeople, the Mid-West Deaf Association <strong>and</strong> Irish <strong>Sign</strong> Link.The consultation involved:• Three consultation workshops with members <strong>of</strong> the Deaf community• One consultation workshop with public sector service providers• Interviews <strong>and</strong> discussions with a number <strong>of</strong> organisations <strong>and</strong> individuals whohave a particular expertise, knowledge, interest or involvement in the provision<strong>of</strong> sign language interpretation services.4.2.1 The consultation workshops with Deaf peopleThe workshops aimed to gather the views <strong>of</strong> Deaf people who would have manydifferent kinds <strong>of</strong> needs for sign language interpretation. Participants includedpeople in employment <strong>and</strong> further education, home-makers, men, women, olderpeople, young people, people in areas where sign language interpretation isreadily available, <strong>and</strong> people living in rural areas where there is very limitedaccess. Two workshops with the Deaf community were held in Dublin, <strong>and</strong> onein Limerick.
