upholding the status <strong>of</strong> Irish <strong>Sign</strong> <strong>Language</strong> <strong>and</strong> its related culture <strong>and</strong> norms.The IDS is recognised by the World Federation <strong>of</strong> the Deaf (WFD) <strong>and</strong> theEuropean Union <strong>of</strong> the Deaf (EUD). The latter are recognised by the UnitedNations <strong>and</strong> the European Union. The IDS Board <strong>of</strong> Directors is governed byDeaf people, elected by members <strong>of</strong> Deaf community.Irish Translators <strong>and</strong> Interpreters AssociationThe Irish Translators <strong>and</strong> Interpreters Association was formed in 1986. Itcomprises <strong>of</strong> translators <strong>and</strong> interpreters working in many languages <strong>and</strong> fields.It includes both literacy <strong>and</strong> technical translators <strong>and</strong> seeks to improve thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>ession which can contribute to Irel<strong>and</strong>'s internationalst<strong>and</strong>ing in culture <strong>and</strong> commerce.National Association for Deaf People (NADP)Since 1963, the NADP has campaigned for full equality in all aspects <strong>of</strong> life forDeaf <strong>and</strong> hearing impaired people, <strong>and</strong> for parents <strong>of</strong> Deaf children to have allappropriate supports <strong>and</strong> services. The NADP provides a wide range <strong>of</strong> servicesdirectly. NADP is also actively involved in advocating <strong>and</strong> lobbying for improvedservices <strong>and</strong> new developments. On occasion, the NADP provides interpreters asa service to deaf people when Irish <strong>Sign</strong> Link is unable to meet dem<strong>and</strong>.NADP services are delivered through a network <strong>of</strong> 10 Resource Centres located in:Dublin, Galway, Tullamore, Kilkenny, Dundalk, Limerick, Letterkenny, Killarney,Wexford <strong>and</strong> Cork (in partnership with the Cork Association for the Deaf).<strong>Sign</strong> <strong>Language</strong> Association <strong>of</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong> (SLAI)Established in 1985, SLAI provides training for Irish <strong>Sign</strong> <strong>Language</strong> tutors whoteach hearing people throughout Irel<strong>and</strong>. SLAI hold annual examinations <strong>and</strong>award certificates <strong>of</strong> competence in Irish <strong>Sign</strong> <strong>Language</strong> to successful c<strong>and</strong>idates.Centre for Deaf Studies (CDS) - Trinity College DublinCDS was established in 2001 <strong>and</strong> provides training for Irish <strong>Sign</strong> <strong>Language</strong> tutors<strong>and</strong> Irish <strong>Sign</strong> <strong>Language</strong>/English interpreters, general training in the field <strong>of</strong> DeafStudies, <strong>and</strong> linguistic research focusing on describing Irish <strong>Sign</strong> <strong>Language</strong> (ISL).Other <strong>Service</strong> ProvidersKerry Deaf Resource CentreThe Kerry Deaf Resource Centre has 2 full time <strong>and</strong> 2 part time employees <strong>and</strong>works with a pool <strong>of</strong> 5 interpreters in Kerry, with access to a further 5 interpretersin Cork. Its primary activities include booking sign language interpreters, providingtraining (as <strong>and</strong> when required), access to information on interpreters complaintsprocedure, interpreter code <strong>of</strong> ethics, access to independent information <strong>and</strong>advice on good practice in interpreting.
