household assets and amenities 69Box 5.3Have Television, Will WatchWhile it is not unusual to see <strong>India</strong>n families watch<strong>in</strong>g television at a neighbour’s home, own<strong>in</strong>g a television makes a considerable difference<strong>in</strong> television-watch<strong>in</strong>g habits, particularly for women. Among the IHDS households, nearly 48 per cent own a television set. These householdsare far more likely to watch television and to watch it regularly than households that do not own a television set. This may limit the likelihoodthat <strong>in</strong>formational messages, such as those about HIV/AIDS or polio vacc<strong>in</strong>ation, will reach their <strong>in</strong>tended audience.Source: IHDS 2004–5 data.TV Ownership and Frequency of TV Watch<strong>in</strong>gHIGHLIGHTS• 72 per cent of the surveyed households report hav<strong>in</strong>g electricity. However, access to piped <strong>in</strong>door water and aflush toilet is far more limited.• The supply of water and electricity tends to be highly irregular: only 37 per cent of households with piped waterreport water availability of at least 3 hours per day, while only 57per cent of households report that electricity isavailable at least 18 hours per day.• Only 80 per cent households with electricity report gett<strong>in</strong>g a bill from the State Electricity Board. About 11 per centget no bill at all.• Access to all services: water, sanitation, and electricity differ sharply between urban and rural areas; even upper<strong>in</strong>come households <strong>in</strong> villages do not have access to piped water and sanitation.• Households’ access to a variety of consumer durables and other amenities varies considerably across states.• In spite of rapid economic growth <strong>in</strong> the 10 years preced<strong>in</strong>g the survey, few households own expensive goods: 2per cent own a car; 1 per cent a computer; 3 per cent a wash<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e; and 1 per cent a credit card.
