Neuroptera: Libelloides macaronius, identified in the Kalin section of RMNP<br />

(CORINE). This is one of three attractive species representing the order in Bulgaria,<br />

encountered in the mountains. Its biotope is also considered endangered.<br />

Hymenoptera: Formica lugubris, known from the area of <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> Forest<br />

Reserve (IUCN, CORINE, Bern Convention); Formica pratensis – inhabits the areas<br />

of Kalin, Radovichka and Tiha <strong>Rila</strong> River Valleys, Bukovo Berdo, Rizvanitsa<br />

(CORINE, Bern Convention); Formica rufa, found in the area of <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong><br />

Forest Reserve, the Iliyna River Valley and Kalin area (IUCN, CORINE, Bern<br />

Convention).<br />

Lepidoptera: Parnassius apollo bosniensis, found in the area of <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong><br />

Forest Reserve and around Ribni Lakes (IUCN, CORINE, Bern Convention);<br />

Parnassius mnemosyne caucasica, found in <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> Forest Reserve and<br />

around Ribni Lakes (IUCN, CORINE, Bern Convention); Euphydryas aurinia<br />

bulgarica, from <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> Forest Reserve (CORINE, Bern Convention);<br />

Polyommatus eroides, known from <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> Forest Reserve (CORINE, Bern<br />

Convention; Apatura iris iris, found in <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> Forest Reserve and around<br />

Mollusca: Helix pomatia, inhabits <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> Forest Reserve (CORINE).<br />

B. Protected species<br />

The species of invertebrate organisms protected under Bulgarian law and their places<br />

of habitation are listed in the following groups below:<br />

Hymenoptera: Formica rufa, found in the areas of <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> Forest Reserve,<br />

the Iliyna River Valley and the Kalin area. This species is listed under Annexes 2 & 3<br />

of the Biological Diversity Act.<br />

Lepidoptera: Parnassius apollo bosniensis found in the <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> Forest<br />

Reserve and the Ribni Lakes area; Colias caucasica balcanica, from <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong><br />

Forest Reserve and the Kalin area; Erebia rhodopensis, from <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> Forest<br />

Reserve and the Kalin area. All three species are listed in Annexes 2 & 3 of the Act.<br />

3.4.2 Vertebrates<br />

Over the past 30 years, a total of 202 species of vertebrate animals have been<br />

identified in the territory of RMNP: 5 species of fish, 11 amphibians, 12 reptilians,<br />

122 species of birds, and 52 of mammals (Appendix 20).<br />
