Distribution of the forest estate by altitude
Almost 56% of the forest massifs in RMNP occupy areas with altitudes between
1,400 and 2,000m asl. This altitudinal zone provides optimum conditions for the
development of beech, fir, spruce and Macedonian pine forests, both homogeneous
and mixed. About 22% of the Park’s forests are located in the lower-altitude zone, up
to 1,400m asl, common in which are mostly broad-leaf tree species. The remaining
22%, located at higher altitudes of over 2,000m asl, are mostly coniferous (Table 12).
The distribution of forests by altitude in the Rila Monastery Forest Reserve is largely
identical to that of forests in the rest of the Nature Park. About 70.6% are located in
the 1,400 to 1,900 m altitude zone, i.e. thrive in the best growth conditions (Table
13).
