natural environment. The plan should include an assessment of the existing threats<br />

and measures to mitigate the adverse impact of atmospheric conditions, biological<br />

factors, seismic phenomena, human encroachments, etc. Adequate measures should<br />

be planned for preserving the integrity of religious and cultural monuments with the<br />

surrounding natural scenery, as well as regimes and a concept for the integrated<br />

conservation of the cultural and historical heritage.<br />

2.1.2 Program for interpretation of the cultural-historical heritage (as <strong>part</strong> of the<br />

overall Concept for Interpretation in the <strong>Park</strong> – see 2.5: Interpretation and<br />

Education)<br />

• Project: Marking and signposting of objects of cultural-historical heritage<br />

This Project, which is an integral <strong>part</strong> of the general Program for Interpretation within<br />

the <strong>Park</strong>, envisions the placement of information billboards with the names, purpose,<br />

background, significance, etc., of the sites and facilities constituting the cultural and<br />

historical heritage within RMNP; outlining their boundaries, as well as other marking<br />

and signposting depending on the nature of each specific site.<br />

• Project: Marking and signposting of the Pilgrim’s Road<br />

The Project envisions the marking of the historical road bed in an appropriate<br />

manner; putting up signs and information billboards in conformity with the general<br />

Program for Interpretation within the <strong>Park</strong>, the norms and requirements of the Eastern<br />

Orthodox faith, and in compliance with the regimes and norms set for the <strong>Rila</strong><br />

<strong>Monastery</strong> Forest Reserve where sections of the Pilgrims’ Road pass near or through<br />

it.<br />

2.1.3 Program for archaeological research of religious and cultural-historical<br />

sites<br />

• Project: Archaeological research of the cultural-historical sites within <strong>Rila</strong><br />

<strong>Monastery</strong> <strong>Nature</strong> <strong>Park</strong><br />

The Project envisions research of the material remains demonstrating the historical<br />

evolution of today’s <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> complex dating from the period prior to its<br />

construction of its present form and location, as well as of other sites and facilities.<br />

The research work is to be concentrated in the localities of the Cherney ravine, Tsarev<br />

Vrah, Sedloto: the tomb, the ossuary, etc.<br />
