1.0 Ideal (long-term) Goals<br />

A set of ideal (long-term) goals is defined for <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> <strong>Nature</strong> <strong>Park</strong>. They are<br />

consistent with the management objectives required for this category protected area<br />

pursuant to the Protected Areas Act (PAA). These Ideal Goals prescribe the desired<br />

future and conditions that are to be attained by means of planned activities on the<br />

<strong>Park</strong>’s territory. They are intended to be a comprehensive framework in which all<br />

efforts are made to preserve the significance of the territory. The ideal goals do not<br />

change over time; there is no time limit for their implementation.<br />

The Ideal (long-term) Goals set for <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> <strong>Nature</strong> <strong>Park</strong> are set and prioritized<br />

by topics as follows:<br />

1.1 Conservation of religious and cultural heritage<br />

Long-term goal 1.1.1 To conserve and develop the unique Orthodox<br />

religious and cultural-historical complex <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> and the Holy Sites<br />

around it as a center of spiritual culture and education.<br />

This Ideal Goal is aimed at the conservation and planned development of <strong>Rila</strong><br />

<strong>Monastery</strong> and the adjacent Holy Sites (the Tomb of St. John of <strong>Rila</strong>, the St. Luke<br />

Hermitage, the Church of the Holy Virgin, the Pilgrims’ Road, and others) as centers<br />

of the spirit and cultural heritage sites, which form one united and harmonious<br />

complex. All efforts are made to return and maintain these sites to their original<br />

purpose - as examples of holy, spiritual assets of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, as<br />

national treasures, and as sites of importance for Christianity and world heritage.<br />

Long-term goal 1.1.2 To conserve the archaeological, architectural and<br />

other cultural and historical components located within <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> <strong>Nature</strong><br />

<strong>Park</strong> as an integral <strong>part</strong> of the Bulgarian national heritage.<br />

This Ideal Goal relates to the archaeological and historical sites that are not directly<br />

linked with the present-day spiritual and cultural role of <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> (remains of<br />

the earliest <strong>Monastery</strong> buildings, remnants of Roman roads, etc.), as well as to other<br />

sites of cultural and historical significance.<br />

1.2 Conservation of natural components<br />

Long-term goal 1.2.1 To preserve the harmony between natural, culturalhistorical<br />

and religious heritage in the territory of RMNP.<br />

One of the unique and most significant values of <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> <strong>Nature</strong> <strong>Park</strong> is the<br />

exceptional harmony between the sites of cultural and spiritual significance and<br />

pristine nature. The exceptional qualities of the natural environment around <strong>Rila</strong><br />

<strong>Monastery</strong> includes a high degree of vitality and naturalness, the existence of<br />

<strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> <strong>Nature</strong> <strong>Park</strong><br />
