Flora, Fauna and Cenotic Complexes Near the Main Tourist Trails and Near<br />

Ribni Lakes Chalet<br />

Specific natural complexes can be observed along the hiking trails in the <strong>Nature</strong> <strong>Park</strong>,<br />

as well as some plant and animal species of interest to tourists. The trail descriptions<br />

here aim to help the park administration in developing and organize specialized<br />

hiking trails.<br />

1. From the <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> to the north-west, through the western section of the <strong>Rila</strong><br />

<strong>Monastery</strong> Forest Reserve, through Kalugerski Dol, and north toward Ivan Vazov<br />

chalet<br />

The trail goes through an old beech forest and cuts through the main <strong>Rila</strong> oak habitat.<br />

Prior to exiting the <strong>Park</strong>, the trail follows along open grass areas and Boris fir<br />

communities. The dominant habitats are forest, rock and grass, and grass with about 8<br />

- 10 higher plant species of significance for conservation, 3- 4 mammal species and<br />

around 15-17 bird species of significance for conservation. The trail is one meter<br />

wide. It is marked red for the summer. Its overall condition is good. Duration 8-9<br />

hours.<br />

2. From Kirilova poliana to the north-northwest towards Lake Suhoto– Kobilino<br />

branishte<br />

The trail goes through the central <strong>part</strong> of the <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> Forest Reserve, crosses<br />

the main community of Boris fir in the lower sections, and communities of Rumelian<br />

pine and dwarf pine in the higher <strong>part</strong>. The dominant habitats are forest, grass, rock<br />

and, rock and scree with approximately 15 - 30 of higher plant species significance<br />

for conservation, 2-3 mammal species and 12-13 bird species of significance for<br />

conservation.<br />

The trail is one meter wide. It is marked green for the summer. Its overall condition is<br />

good. Duration 3 hours.<br />

3. From Kirilova poliana to the east-southeast towards the Ribni lakes chalet<br />

The road follows Rilska River (during the first half) crossing the entire forest<br />

complex of Boris fir, spruce, and Rumelian pine in immediate proximity to a <strong>Rila</strong><br />

rhubarb habitat; the trail cuts through a dwarf pine complex from Tiha <strong>Rila</strong> locality to<br />

the Ribni lakes chalet. The dominant communities are forest and grass with 20 - 50<br />

higher plant species of significance for conservation, 4-5 mammal species and 15 -17<br />

bird species of significance for conservation. The trail is one meter wide. It is marked<br />

yellow for the summer. Its overall condition is good. Duration 6-7 hours.
