Relic species in the <strong>Park</strong>’e territory number 110 in all (77 glacial and 33 Tertiary).<br />

This means that no less than 7.86 percent of all plant species represented in the <strong>Park</strong><br />

are relics. Glacial relics constitute 5.51 percent of the <strong>Park</strong>’s higher flora.<br />

Representative species are Soldanella pusilla, Primula minima, the dwarf pine (Pinus<br />

mugo) a.o. Tertiary relics make up 2.35 percent of the higher flora. Particularly<br />

widespread are the common juniper (Juniperus communis L.), spruce (Picea abies),<br />

Macedonian pine (Pinus peuce), King Boris’s fir (Abies Borisii-regis) and the locally<br />

endemic <strong>Rila</strong> oak (Quercus protoroburoides).<br />

Of the species of higher plants identified in the territory of RMNP, 57 are protected<br />

under the Biological Diversity Act. Eleven of these are listed in Appendix # 2<br />

regarding plant and animal species, the conservation of which requires designated<br />

protected areas. Fifty-seven species are included in Appendix # 3, regarding protected<br />

wildlife species throughout the entire country. Listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria are<br />

96 species encountered in RMNP: 9 endangered and 87 rare, together making up<br />

12.84% of all wildlife species listed in that book.<br />

European List (E/ECE/1249), 6 species; the Bern Convention, 6 species, and the<br />

CITES List, 24 species. (Fig. 10).<br />

Significant concentrations of rare, endangered and other species have been identified<br />

in the riverside communities of gray alder (Alnus incana), along the Rilets ridge and<br />

in the Mramorets cirque amid communities of dwarf pine (Pinus mugo) and in<br />

limestone terrains, as well as in the territory of <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> Forest Reserve. The<br />

latter location is home to the largest known community of King Boris’s fir (Abies<br />

alba subsp. borisii-regis), and also to the main community of <strong>Rila</strong> oak (Quercus<br />
