and marked appropriately, relevant to the natural, religious and cultural-historical<br />

values of the <strong>Park</strong> (bird-watching, observation of butterflies and plants, horse back<br />

riding tourism, mountain biking, visits to the cultural and historical sites, observing<br />

the implementation of ecologically sound forestry practices, etc.). The trails are to be<br />

developed in line with the provisions of the <strong>Management</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> regarding the <strong>Park</strong><br />

Zones and the respective regimes and norms.<br />

The following are to be designated and built at the initial phase:<br />

- Horse back riding trail;<br />

- mountain biking trail;<br />

- cultural-historical heritage in RMNP trail.<br />

• Project: Building of an ethnographic theme park for showcasing traditional arts<br />

and crafts<br />

Commissioning of an architectural design and site development plan for the<br />

construction of a complex of buildings in the traditional local style and appearance,<br />

suitable for live demonstrations of arts and crafts techniques characteristic of the area<br />

and the country at large; the actual building and operation of the complex. This form<br />

of a tourist attraction is expected to become a major source of income for the<br />

landowner.<br />

• Project: Development of winter sports in <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> <strong>Nature</strong> <strong>Park</strong><br />

The project envisages investigating the possibilities for winter sports development in<br />

the frame of those allowed in the <strong>Management</strong> <strong>Plan</strong>– without building of ski runs.<br />

The Project also envisages setting up of tracks for snowshoes and Nordic ski, forming<br />

of natural open slopes for sleds and other appropriate forms of winter sports<br />

corresponding to the <strong>Park</strong>s management goals.<br />

2.5 Interpretation and education<br />

2.5.1 Program for cultural-historical and environmental education<br />

• Project: Environmental education in RMNP<br />

Development and operation of a comprehensive program of educational activities in<br />

the field of environmental protection. These will include different forms of class work<br />

and extracurricular activities: Green Schools, field trips, etc.<br />

• Project: Environmental education in the schools<br />

The Project envisions expanding the educational activity of the Directorate of RMNP<br />

for inclusion of information about the <strong>Park</strong>, its cultural and environmental<br />

significance, in the form of specialized classes within the curriculum of schools in the<br />

area. Also proposed is the setting up of <strong>part</strong>nerships with educational institutions on a<br />

national and regional level.<br />
