- To the west, the zone boundary coincides with the <strong>Park</strong> boundary;<br />

- To the north in separate sections it borders with the <strong>Park</strong> boundaries, in the<br />

remaining sections it borders with the High Visitor Use Tourist Sub-zone,<br />

i.e. its northern boundary runs parallel to the Rilska River, some 500<br />

meters from its southern bank;<br />

- To the east, the zone boundary starts from just above the point of<br />

confluence of the Iliyna and Rilska Rivers, following the ridge (Krivo<br />

Bardo) across Cheresha locality to the upper timberline;<br />

- To the south, the zone boundary runs along the upper timberline, parallel<br />

to the ridge defining the Rilska River Watershed, and ends at the<br />

Dyavolska River.<br />

Regimes for the Sustainable Forestry Zone<br />

Any human acts and activities are strictly forbidden except those as per Paragraph<br />

1.1.1 above, and the following:<br />

1. The forestry activities envisaged in Forest Inventory 2000 for <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong><br />

<strong>Nature</strong> <strong>Park</strong> are applied in the zone, as well as the additional requirements of this<br />

<strong>Plan</strong>;<br />

2. Restoration of the existing road network for timber extraction and transportation;<br />

3. Building of new forest roads for timber transportation;<br />

4. Storage and transportation of timber in a way that does not interfere with the<br />

<strong>Park</strong>’s tourist and spiritual value;<br />

5. Timber transportation by truck, with the exit point via Eleshnitza locality or along<br />

the southern border of the <strong>Park</strong> in the direction of the Dyavolska River;<br />

6. Afforestation in forest sections of inhibited natural renewal.<br />

Norms<br />

1. Use shall not exceed the total envisaged amount for the territory for the period<br />

2000-2010 according to the Forest Inventory 2000.<br />

The total volume of logging envisioned amounts to 63,260m³.The annual timber<br />

extraction, according to FI 2000 data, amounts to 6,326m³, or 1/10 of the quantity<br />

of timber subject to logging;<br />

2. All logging operations shall be scheduled during the period between September<br />

1 st of the current and May 31 st of the following year;<br />

3. The period for regenerative activities shall be extended to 50 years;<br />

4. The intensity of timber use shall not exceed 15%;<br />

5. The existing road network may be increased by no more than 2 km of road by the<br />

year 2010;<br />

6. Up to 10% of all rotting trees shall be spared during timber use;<br />

7. The transport on the <strong>Park</strong>s territory to be with 10m 3 trucks;<br />

8. Only animal traction shall be used to extract the timber from the logging site;<br />

9. Reloading stations and temporary storages are to be built only in the Sustainable<br />

Forestry Zone area.<br />
