1. Re-introduction of the chamois, the Balkan trout and other species;<br />

2. Providing assistance to populations of endangered plant and animal species;<br />

3. Amateur fishing at Lake Smradlivo and Ribni Lakes only;<br />

4. Erosion control activities and reclamation of damaged or degraded terrains in<br />

keeping with the stated need for re-integration of the cultural landscape;<br />

5. Grazing in designated areas (Appendix 29);<br />

6. Regulating the size of animal populations;<br />

7. Hay-making, by personal means in designated areas (Appendix 29);<br />

8. Berries (Vaccinium sp.) collection for commercial use in the Tiha <strong>Rila</strong> locality,<br />

along the Rilska River stream from Dyavolska River on the east to the point of<br />

confluence of the Marinkovitza and Rilska Rivers;<br />

9. Wild fruits, mushrooms and medicinal plant collection for personal needs in the<br />

entire zone territory from defined and marked places.<br />

Norms<br />

1. Grazing: The number of heads of livestock allowed to graze in the territory is<br />

determined in the following regulations:<br />

• For lands in the timber less zone:<br />

- for cattle: 15 decares per head minimum;<br />

- for sheep: 6 decares per head minimum.<br />

2. Regulated motor vehicle access to Kalin Dam10:<br />

- Up to 3 private (non-service) motor vehicles at any one time past<br />

the gate on the road between Kalin Water Power Station and<br />

Kalin Dam;<br />

3. Logging and timber transport when sanitary activities are implemented to be<br />

conducted with animal power only, without building of new roads.<br />

Recommendations<br />

1. During visits to the Zone:<br />

- for scientific research purposes, organized groups shall not exceed 7 people;<br />

- for education purposes, organized groups shall not exceed 20 people;<br />

- for marking, enclosing and maintaining of the sanitarian-protection zones belts,<br />

shall not exceed 7 people.<br />

2. It is recommended the grazing herds not to be in the vicinity of tourist trails.<br />

2.3 The Environmentally Sound Use Zone<br />

Background and rationale<br />

A significant proportion of the natural resources in <strong>Rila</strong> <strong>Monastery</strong> <strong>Nature</strong> <strong>Park</strong> are<br />

renewable: the climate as a whole, mountain air and waters. Other renewable<br />

resources in the <strong>Park</strong> are medicinal plants, forest fruits and mushrooms that, if<br />

properly used, will enable the <strong>Park</strong> management to attain some of its main goals –<br />

1.3.1, 1.3.3, 1.6.1 and etc.<br />
