And why all this descriptive grandeurin the address to these seven churches, if the onlywere meant ? Surely there were other churches ofy equalimportance at that Where were the churches atCorinth, Cappadocia, dey. alatia, Thessalonica, Philippi, Collosse,Rome, Jerusalem, Bithynia, &c.? Our text showsthat the seven churches were to be understood in aiigurativeor mysticalsense. "The mystery of the sevenstars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the sevenolden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angelsshe ofseven churches; and the seven candlesticks whichthou sawest are the seven churches." These sevenchurches are represented by " sevenlamps." See Zach.iv. 2 " And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said,I have looked, and behold a. candlestick all of gold, witha bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon,and seven ipes to the seven lamps which were upon theto thereof?" These sevenlamps are called "the eyesofpthe Lord which run to and fro the wholethrong;earth." See Zach. iv. 10. If this is true,n it readilyfollows that the seven churches of Asia areonlyused asaTa representing the church "throughe whole`"ea Again: the seven lamps, which are the sevenchurches, are called the seven spirits of God. Rev. iv.5, "And there were seven lamps of tire buming beforethe throne, which are the seven of God."spirits I haveclearly proved, and I think it will admitted by all, thatthe "seven eyes of the Lord," and "the seven spirits ofGod," are the seven churches to whom John was directedto write or dedicate his book, the Revelation ofJesus Christ.And I will now show that these comprehended thewhole church through the whole earth.
