Another sign of the last day you will findgiven by Paul, 1 Thess. v. 2, 3, "For yourselves knowperfectly, that the day oi' the Lord so cometh as a thiefin the night For when they shall say, Peace andsafety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, astravail upon a woman with child; and they shall notescape." Compare 2 Pet. ii. 17-22.The doctrine of peace and safety, and that there isnopunishment in the future state, had but few or noadvocates until very recently. I am not certain butthe first preacher of this soul-destroying doctrine is nowliving; and nowthey boast of their multitudes of followersand advocates There have been, in past ages, a.few who preached the doctrine of the restoration of allmen, after a suitable punishment in hell; but to modernUniversalists belongs the invention of preaching "peaceand safety when sudden destruction cometh." If thissign is not iiilfilled in the preachers of this order at thistime, I ask, How can it be fultilled? and what must the'doctrine of those be who preach "peace and safety" ?Surely, no human beingcan invent a doctrine so full of(promised&_" peace and safety " to the wicked asthis;and no o er denomination on our globe ever have opposedthe doctrine of the coming of Christ, the judgmentday, and tilture punishments, hut the modern Un1~versalists; and if this is the doctrine that Paul hadreference to in our text, as, I am fully satisfied, everycandid andreligious mind must and will allow, thenwe may reasona suppose "sudden destruction comethupon them, 'ly and ey shall not escape."Therefore, my dear reader, I shall now, with a fewclosing remarks, leave you tn your own reflections.The Jews had twenty-one signs in the Scriptures giventhem of the first coming and person of Jesus Christ.; yetumany rejected him as an impostor.
