What covenant is this to be confirmed?I answer, It cannot be the Jewish covenant,for that was confirmed by Moses many hundred yearsbefore Daniel lived. There being but two covenants,it must ot' necessity be the new covenant of whichChrist is the Mediator; Moses having been the mediatorof the old, and Christ afterwards of the new. Ifthese things are so, and the gospel covenant is meantby Daniel, then the time the gospelwaspreached byJohn and Christ is here called a week; for Christ him~"And he (Messiah)self' preached more than seven days. Christ kept threepassovers with the Jews aiier he began his ministry,and oefore he nailed the ceremonial awto his cross.This is strong evidence that a week is seven years, andthat Daniel's-70 weeks are to be understood as meaning490 yearsAgain, "In the midst of the week he should causethe sacrihce and oblation to cease," or, as all Hebrewscholars agree, "In the last half of the week," &.c., isthe more proper translation; and it is evident that thistranslation would harmonize with the other parts of t.lepassage, " the sacrifice and oblation to cease."What sacrifice and oB'ering is this, which the Messiahwas to cause to cease P I answer, It must of course bethat oneoffering and sacrifice for sin of which all otheroferings and sacrifices were but types. It could notbe the Jewish sacrifices and oferings, for two goodreasons.lst. This is but one sacrifice, and the Jews had many.It does not say sacrifices; therefore it cannot meanJewish sacrifices, nor offerings.2d reason. The Jewish sacrifices and offerings did notcease in, nor even very nigh, the last half of the weekin which the Messiah confirmed the covenant with many;and, even to the present day, they make oblations, if notsacrifices.
