200VLncruan Xiu.of the great city; the revolution s kenof in this prophecy-allhappened in the Frenchorevolution, betweenthe years 1793 and 1798. A decree waspassed by thecouncil and directory of France, prohibitingthe Bibleto be read in public, in any of the chapels in France, and Bibles were 'gathered in heaps, and boniires weremade of them, and great rejoicing-swere had all overthe kingdom at the downfall of priestcrait, as they calledit; and particularly at L ons, where the Scriptures werepublicly dragged through the streets, with circumstancesof the greatest contempt, and other things transacted inthe exultation of their triumph, which are too shockingto narrate. Let it suiiice, then, to say, that after threeyears and a half the Bible was again permitted to beread, and religion had free tolemtion in France; andwhat isequally as remarkablefis, that the same year afew individuas in London established what has sincebeen styled the Bible society, which has b`een instrumentalin sending Bibles among all nations, and of translatingthem into more than 150 langluages since that period;and almost all the writers, w o acknowledge theBible to be the two witnesses, do agree that the events, prophesied of in this passage, were literallyaccomplishedin the French revolution. Now, the Bible ismore than restored to its former state in ociety; it isexalted, and every person can have, and read, and examinefor themselves into its sacred truths. It is also afact, that the progress of the Bible society has exceededthe most sanguine expectations of its advocates; and theAtheists and Deists of our day appear toconfounded at these events. Instead now of bedperfectly eclaringopen war against the Bible, they make pretence at leastof drawing their rules of morality from this blessedbook; and the man who should now undertake to writedown the word of God, would be considered either amadman, or a fool. One thingmore: In the FrenchRevolution, the names or titles of men were abolished;and it is said by some writers, that, in the list oftitled nobility, and 135' the great catalogue of pri y orders, there were seven thousand destroyed at once. Wellmight the remnant be amighted, and give glory to theGod of heaven!
