22 'run 'mire mnsnrrxucxEarth, has a number of significations.(L) lt means the terraqueous globe, asin Gen.viii. 22: "VVhile the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summerand winter, and day and night, shall notcease." (2.) It means the land, as in Gen.i. ll): "And God called the dry 'land earth."It means the inhabitants of the earth,as in Gen. xi. 1": The whole earth was ofone language."I have an opinion that "the earlh" in ourtext means the globe which we inhabit.Man vas made to inhabit the globe; and ifthe devil canprevent this part of God's purposesfrom being executed, then so much ofthe design of the Almighty would be frustrated.But he cannot do it: for Jesus Christhas engagedto redeem the earth from thecurse, rand fill the world with fruit of theholy seed: "the meek shall inherit the earth."indications of hisAnd already he has givenpower to do what he has engaged to perform.First ; he has proved his power to forgiveand cleanse penitents from sin, on earth.This even his enemies acknowledged he did;for they brought it as an accusation againsthim. Mark ii. 7, 10: "Why doth this manthus speak blasphemies? Who can forgivesins but Got] only?" Then Christ says,"But that, ye may know that the ,Son ofman hath poweron earth toforgive sins."This is onegreat step towards executingthis glorious purpose and promiseof God.
