_-OF_ THE SAINTS.Secondly ; he has manifested his power toconquer death, by raising Lazarus and others,and afterwards taking his own life again;showing that he has power to raise up allthe meek of the earth. If this could nothave been done, then death would have heldus in bondage; and how could the meekinherit the earth? For we must havebodies to inherit the body of the earth,and substance to inherit substance. Therefore,two important hindrances to our inheritingetheearth are removed by the manifestedpower Of Christ. Another power isalso necessary to be used in order to ensurethe happiness of the meek. T/iirdly; evilspirits must be driven out of the earth, orthe meek might be liable to deception anderror, which would till the earth with confusionand despair: but in this Christ hasproved his power, by casting out a. legion ofevil spirits from one man, and many out ofothers, and driving them into the sea, anddoing as he pleased; showing that in due timehe would be able to chain Satan and his host,that they come not upon the earth to troubleor deceive the meek.Fourlizly; he must cleanse the earth, inorder to make the place of their residence glorious.This has been once done by water.And as Peter tells us, (2 Peter iii. 6, 7',)"Whereby the world that then was, beingoverflowed with Water, perished;but theheavens and the earth which_are now,Aby
