_142.u:c-run ix.servant: to commit fomication, and to eat thingssacrificed to idols." ln this verse we have strongtestimony that the exposition we have given of theseven churches is correct; for no character given thewoman Jezebel will apply so exactly,as the womansittin on the scarlet-colored beast, full of names ofblasphemy, "havin a golden cup in her hand filll ofabominations and ligthiness of her fornication."Jezebel is afigurative name, alludinglto Ahab's wife, who slew the prophets ofthe Lord, led er husband intoidolatry, and fed the prophets of Baal at her own table.A morestriking figure could not have been used to describethe Papal gbomination. See 1 Kings xviii. xix.xxi. chapters. It is very evident from ashistory, well asfrom this verse in Revelation, that the church of Christdid suffer some of the Papal monks to preach and teachamong them. See the history of the Waldenses.21, "And I gave her space to repent of her fornication, and she repented not." 22, " Behold I will cast herinto a bed, and them that commit adultery with her intogreat tribulation, except they repent of their deeds." 23,"And I will kill her children with death; and all thechurches shall know that I am he which searcheth thereins and hearts, and I will giye unto every one of youaccording to your works." e cannot be mistaken inthe character given to this mystical Jezebel, when wecompare the descriptions here used, and thethreatened, with other passages of like import juclgrnents in evelation, where mystical Babylon is described and threatened.See Rev. ix. 20, 21, "And the rest of the menwhich were not killed by these plagues, yet repented notofthe works of their hands, that they should not worshipdevils and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood, which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:neither repented they of t.heir murders, nor of their sorcerics, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts."lf' these last texts mean anti-Christ, of which I believenono have any doubt, t.hat is, no commentator that I havebeen able to consult., then it is equally evident that thiswoman, called Jezebel, in this prophecy ofthe church in'.l'hya.tira, means the same; and the conclusion is strong
