Between the years 190 and30 B. C. nearly all these kingdoms became Roman provinces.From Daniel xi. 5, 13, inclusive, we have aprophecy of the two principal kingdoms out of these fourand Syria; and any one who may have the curiosityto see the exact eement between the prophecyand history, can read R;§in's Ancient History, where hehas not only given us the history, but applied this proph~ecy. And as lsee no reason to disagree from him in hisapplication of these texts, I shall, therefore, for brevity'|I8 e, pass over these texts, and examine the text, Dan. xi.14, " And in those times there shall many stand up againstthe king of the south; also, the robbers of th peopleshall exalt themselves to establish the vision; hut theyshall fs ll." The king of the south, in this verse, withoutany doubt, means king of Egypt; but what the robbers¥`tIq/_people means remains yet a doubt perhapstu some.it ishat it cannot mean Antiochus, or any king of Syria,plain ; for the angel had been talking about that nation fora number of verses previous, and nowsays, "also therobbers of thy people," &c., evidently implying someother nation. I will admit that Antiochus did perhapsrob the Jews; but how could this "establish the vision,"ei Antiochus is not spoken of any where in the vision asperforming any act of that kind; for he belonged to whatas called the Grecian kingdom in the einem. Again, "toulablish the vision," must mean to make sure, complete,or fulfil the same. And if it cannot be shown that the
