3.1 Shoes and Mirrors: Images of Doubling The Avatar in Panamabeing reaccepted into their community by acting as one with bothshadow and reflection. 14Hoffmann’s character undergoes experiences shared by otherprotagonists in literature of the double. Spikher is a dislocatedprotagonist removed from his native Germany. Upon encounteringGiuletta for the first time he experiences an uncanniness which onceagain takes the form of an oppressive heaviness over the upper body:“As she came close to him, a strange force seized him and crushed hisbreast so that he couldn’t even breathe”. 15 He is immediately loath todistance himself from her. It is then the mirror is mentioned:‘If only I could remain yours forever and ever,’said Erasmus. They were standing directly infront of the beautiful wide mirror, which was setin the wall, and on the side of it tapers wereburning brightly. More firmly, more closely,Giuletta pressed Erasmus to her, while shemurmured softly in his ear, ‘Leave me yourreflection, my beloved; it will be mine andremain with me forever’.Erasmus is horrified: “How can you keep my reflection? It is partof me. It springs out to meet me from every clear body of water orpolished surface”, though not horrified enough to resist the temptation. 16After turning over his mirror image and then being caught without one,he is socially ostracised:‘’Struth. He’s not there. He doesn’t reflect.’‘What? No reflection? He’s not in the mirror?’everyone cried in confusion. ‘He’s a mauvaissujet, a homo nefas. Kick him out the door!’Raging and filled with shame, Erasmus fled tohis room, but he had hardly gotten there whenhe was informed by the police that he musteither appear with full complete, impeccablyaccurate reflection before the magistrate withinone hour or leave the town.14 “He struck upon a certain Peter Schlemihl, who had sold his shadow; they plannedto travel together, so that Erasmus Spikher could provide the necessary shadow andPeter Schlemihl could reflect properly in a mirror. But nothing came of it.” 128.15 Hoffmann, “The Lost Reflection” 117. E.T.A. Hoffmann, “A New Year’s EveAdventure” 11 Oct. 2006. .16 Hoffmann, “The Lost Reflection” 121.165
