EN Macaulay was itching to make a start on hisHistory of England he recorded in his diary that 'thegreat difficulty of a work of this kind is the beginning '.'How is it', he asked himself—'how is it to be joined onto the preceding events! How am I to commence it! Icannot', he goes on to say, 'plunge, slap dash, into themiddle of events and characters. I cannot, on the otherhand, write a history of the whole reign of James theSecond as a preface to the history of William the Third;and, if I did, a history of Charles the Second would stillbe equally necessary as a preface to that of James theSecond.'Now, I am conscious that this is a somewhat portentousbeginning to a slight discourse on what many may regardas a trivial subject; but the difficulties of great men areintensified in the case of little ones, and in confrontingmy difficulties I may claim excusably some kinship withMacaulay. For the theme I am given to lecture upon is'The Theatre in the 'Seventies', and at the outset I ambrought face to face with the fact that the theatre of the'seventies was influenced in no small degree by a manwho wrote and did his best work in the 'sixties. I alludeto Thomas William Robertson.
