One of them, HenryScott Holland, when he succeeded longo intervallo toMozley's Chair, initiated a thorough-going proposal tocancel even the profession of a Christian faith for theDegrees in Divinity: a project, which went beyond thepractical requirements and the conscience of the times,but made it easier, perhaps, for his successor to effect theliberal compromise now in being. But to return to the'seventies: in that actual decade it was apparently leftfor laymen to foreshadow the coming 'liberty of prophesying'.Max Miiller's Hibbert Lectures in 1877, andstill more the great series of The Sacred Books of theEast, which he inaugurated two years later with histranslation of the Veda, encouraged the employment ofscientific method in a department of Theology, which hasbeen rather unhappily entitled 'Comparative Religion',but certainly exhibits a tendency to weaken the appealto authoritative Dogmatics. About the same date anessay on the Resurrection, also published by the HibbertTrust, and written, as I am, perhaps, more especiallybound to add, by a young Student and Tutor of ChristChurch, which adopted and developed the Visionaryhypothesis in explanation of the Christophanies recordedin the New Testament, had a rather chilly reception inOxford; though something not very unlike that rationaleof the facts is now to be found in such bulwarks of thenew Apologetic as Foundations (1912) and EssaysCatholic and Critical (1926)—works which leave thetheological position of a Liddon or a Pusey, and even thatof Lux Mundi, far behind.
