So the campaignaccomplished no permanent results in changinghabits, and in a few years' time it was completely forgotten.The movement for promoting the Higher Education ofWomen, and the steps by which it made its first permanenthome at Cambridge, have been described so oftenand so well that little need be said here. The settlementat Hitchin in 1869, and the removal to Girton, record theapproach from outside; the establishment of a newexamination designed for women, and the provision oflectures in 1869-70, belong to the scheme devised byCambridge residents on somewhat different lines. Thelatter began with lodgings or hire of a house, and thefirst block of residential buildings known then as NewnhamHall was not occupied till 1875. The enterprise hadbehind it many of the leading academic Liberals of thetime. To mention the names of Adams, Bateson, Maurice,Liveing, Bonney, Peile, Ferrers, Venn, the Fawcetts, andthe Kennedys, may give a very imperfect roll of honour.Some (Sidgwick for instance) bore financial risks in theventure, and Mrs Bateson acted as treasurer. Historiesof Girton and Newnham Colleges supply the details of adevelopment truly astounding. The point I would presshere is that the time and interest of many active graduateswere during the 'seventies much engaged in forwardingthis movement, which gradually became a regularfeature of Cambridge life. The admission of women toTripos examinations (by courtesy of examiners) was notgranted officially until 1881, after a good-humouredstruggle. The noted triumphs of Miss Ramsay (1887) andMiss Fawcett (1890) were generally welcomed. There wasas yet no sign of a reactionary sentiment somewhatanalogous to the jealous attitude of Trade Unions.
